Podcasts Now Bi-Weekly

Having watched the trends in the downloads and
getting a feel for people's listening habits, I am
switching things up a bit. Instead of laying in the new
podcasts and archive material all at the
beginning of the month, The Best Radio You Have
Never Heard will now be bi-wwekly

From here on in expect great new music to hit your
computer twice a month.
On the first and say the fifteenth of the month.

Give me a shout back and let me know what you think.

Say Hello To Paulie

This is Paulie.
He was left on the side of the road in Kentucky. Was rescued and made his way to a kind shelter in the Chicago area.

Now he lives with us.

The first music this little creature ever heard was one of the new podcasts for June 2006.
I hope that wasn't a bad introduction to the art form . . .

NOLA Part Two

I just had a very nice cab driver take us on a 1.5 hour $90.00 (with tip) cab ride.

Never mind what my white bread tourist ass said yesterday.

Things are not OK. Between the airport and French Quarter and then to Jazz Fest it looks a little beat up.

What I saw today cannot even be put into words. Beyond your wildest horror show imagination.

The only thing I can even possibly compare it to intensity wise, was a look at the death camps from WWII.

I am not shitting you.
The 9th Ward looks like Katrina hit yesterday and somebody lit a few bombs just for grins.

Our driver sure knew how to do a tour as he save the best for last.

It was so beyond comprehension, that I thought taking video or pictures would be disrespectful, which is why I cannot even begin to give you the picture of what I just saw. Twisted houses, cars thru roofs. This wasn’t anything you could ever imagine . . .

Notes From New Orleans

NOLA is in better shape than I expected. If you weren’t paying attention you wouldn’t know anything bad happened here because parts of NOLA always looked beat up and run down. But when you are paying attention you can see. They have done a great job in 8 months.
But what is weird is what you don’t see. They are so short of people here. Big restaurants that were and have been open for business, had many tables open (they were in plain site) but not enough staff to put people in them.
Tons of places that we know are open late, especially on a big weekend like this were closed way early. Again not enough staff.
Help wanted ads for days in the paper.

The good news: They are going to be OK if they get their shit together before the hurricane season starts and get them levees fixed.

Big crowd here for Jazz Fest and people are spending some dough. And everybody thanks you profusely for coming. They say right out “we are so glad you came, because we really need it now.”

So I am doing my bit by trying to relieve them of a few extra soft shelled crabs, hot andoullie sausage, shrimps and those pesky mufalettas from Central Grocery.

Ever Had A Really Bad Nightmare . . . ?

This has been hell . . .

April podcasts 12 days late, you're thinking ? Something must be up ?

And you would be right.

Thru a misunderstanding between myself and my host server that had nothing to do with anything other than me reporting myself as spam (huh? nevermind . . . I was just turning in the punks who leave spam comments) and the host interpreted it to mean I was the spammer and they took the site down.

I knew within 10 seconds what had happened, but since they are a huge corporate dynamo, they have no viable phone support so there was no making a case for a silly error.

There is more to the story about how it is a miracle I am back and in one piece thanks to Jessica and Jason who were my humans on the other end of the line, and of course to the ever present Alex N, who looks after me with the great care, Again no amount of thanks could be enough to thank him.
But lets get back to biz at hand. April editions are loading as I write this.

And I have a few new URL's that lead to the site that aren't nearly as big a mouthful as thebesradioyouhaveneverheard.

Next time you tell someone about the site via email or word of mouth (which I am hoping everyone is, to help create buzz for my little project) just give them:

www.bestradiopodcast.com

Short and sweet.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming already in progress . . .

Playlists and How You Can Get Them

I thought I had touched on this at one time or another but it bears repeating.

I don't have playlists for the podcasts published anywhere, for a simple reason:

I like them to be listened to with no pretense as to what might be coming up. Part of their charm is the surprises that they bear.

My policy has always been to send out a playlist to anyone who asks for one, ONCE THEY HAVE SWORN TO GOD THAT THEY HAVE LISTENED TO A PARTICULAR PODCAST !

So don't be shy. If you have heard something that you like and would like to know the song or the artist, just drop me a line dbx166@rcn.com and put "playlist for Podcast" in the subject line or something like that or leave a comment here.

I'll get back to you in quick order . . .

Podcasts Without an iPod

Thought I would repost this from a while ago . . .

Just want to clarify something here to everyone . . .

You do not need to have an iPod or iTunes to hear Podcasts. All you need is a computer and an internet connection.

If you go to my Podcast webpage

http://www.bestradioyouhaveneverheard.com

you can listen quite simply by clicking the links on the site or better yet, Control-Click (mac) or Right Click (windows) and download the whole show and play it back however you play any mp3 file. This is preferred as it will not rack up excessive bandwidth charges to me and you have it forever

To load the podcasts into your iTunes as a subscription go to the main podcast page

http://www.bestradioyouhaveneverheard.com/podcasts/

Once there, there is an orange One-Click for iTunes button. It works great.

You can also plug this into the Subscribe To Podcast under the Advanced pull down menu in the tool bar of iTunes (version 4.9 or higher) for a direct ride to my Podcast. It also works for all podcatching applications like iPodder or Juice.

http://www.bestradioyouhaveneverheard.com/podcasts/index.xml

No matter how you subscribe, it will automatically check for updates and download the new podcasts as soon as they become available. Just check at the beginning of the month and they will be there waiting for you. Might even find an archive show to surprise you now and again !

Once you’ve downloaded it (if you like) and you wanted to expand it to a .wav file for PC or an .aiff file for Mac, you can burn it directly to CD (where it will fit very neatly as they were originally produced for CD) or do just about anything you might do with a mp3 file.

Adding Back Catalog Episodes

I've had a bunch of requests from newer listener wanting to know where they can find older episodes. On the old host site that was prohibitive.
On this new hosting site there is ample room and bandwidth (for now) to revisit some of the shows of the past.

The first in a series of "back catalog," "In A Big World-The Best Radio You Have Never Hear Vol. 02" first appeared July, 2006.

For those who may just be joining us who have expressed the desire to download previous episodes, I will gradually add more each month as time marches on and we'll see how the space and bandwidth holds up.

Look for all new titles still at the beginning of the month, and I will pepper in the archive files throughout the month, so keep you eyes peeled and your podcatchers open . . .

Welcome ! ! !

Welcome one and all to the new home of The Best Radio You Have Never Heard.
This is the Blog page so don't forget to link over to the Podcast pages if you haven't been there yet.
We have loads more bandwidth here so there shouldn't be any pesky "Bandwidth Exceeded" notices, at least for a while. But don't get cocky ! Download the damn podcasts !

Please leave comments on the episodes (as you can leave comments on the Podcast page as well) and let me know what you think of the shows and/or leave a note here to let me know where you are listening from and how you found the podcast.

And also the huge shout out and thanks to Alex Nesbitt from Digitalpodcast.com without whom there would be no web page. His tireless effort on my clueless behalf was relentless.
My words on this page cannot thank him enough.
But a shout out on the first entry speaks volumes I hope.
Thanks Alex ! ! !

Bandwidth Exceeded

Seems the demand has exceeded the supply.

I knew this was coming.

So if you have been trying to get to The Best Radio You Have Never Heard and are getting that error notice it is real.
(I think you can still get thru using Yahoo (the link on the left or http://podcasts.yahoo.com/series?s=05f1e05370d4aae85e4a2153a2cfc3c7 ) and I am not sure but it is possible that iTunes might still break thru)

Steps are being taken to fix the problem but it is not going to be a painless transition.

Help has arrived by the way of Steve Jobs announcement at the Mac World Expo this past Tuesday. Apple has begun hosting podcasts which offers a much greater bandwidth with a very good price.

I am going to explore this opportunity rapidly and soon may have a new home.

What does this mean to you ?

Well if you are a subscriber, there will be a new RSS address (the .xml url) which you will have to manually change in iTunes or whichever pod catcher you use.

There will also be a new url for the home page for those who download from there (and you are all downloading the files instead of just playing them, right ?)

And I need everybody's help once the change has been made to get the word out about the new home. So please pass along all the info as it happens to anybody you may have turned on to the podcast or anyone you know who is a listener

Please stay tuned to this page as I will have info posted here as soon as I get things sorted (I actually need a nap right now)

Some Reviews and Comments From Listeners

The Best Radio You Have Never Heard makes me take back everything nasty I've ever said about podcasting.
Well, not all of it.
The lisping, arch and smug, nasally plugged self aggrandizers are still there in all corners of the globe.
What makes this one different?
Not giving a shit about whether or not music is "podsafe" (a word I'm starting to loath) , for one.
The second being the late seventies free-form radio vibe .
I'm picking up what this cat's laying down.
Zappa, Patti Smith, Steely Dan, The Clash, soundbites. And no annoying chatter. He saves the drama for his mamma, or whatever.
Go man, go.
Be sure and download the shows to your hard drive first-what you think the guys made of bandwidth? He's performing a public service here people.

Jay N, Chicago

Hey Perry,
Thanks for turning us onto the podcasts. Terrific. I've heard some favorite tunes like, D.I.Y. ... and some not-so-favorites like that Ted Nugent tune.  I do really appreciate the diversity of the musical content, and also the absence of commercials. The podcasts reminded me of what FM radio USED to be like, in its best days, and ought to be like now. Challenging.

Also ... The sound quality is EXCELLENT!!!  I think it's probably the best quality soundcast I've ever heard on the net. Highly recommended, even if there doesn't appear to be any YES music in the podcasts. At least, after having
listened to 3 of the seven podcasts, I haven't heard any Yes music yet.

Blessings!

Tim E

The Best Radio You Never Heard podcasts have been absolutely wonderful!  I have enjoyed every last one.  There are a few that I missed.  Where can I find them?  Is there a site anywhere with the downloads?
I plan to spread the word about TBRYNH.  I have other friends and some nephews who would enjoy it.

Thanks,

Jim S. Michigan

Where are the set lists?
Great work my friend
Keep it up

He who casts the first pod...

My, how we evolve. First it was diaries, then we moved to blogs to splurge our thoughts and opinions. First, there were mixed tapes and radio and now we have Satelitte Radio and now Podcasts to project our music tastes.

I have been meaning to write about podcasting for a while and have been considering taking a stab and doing my own. But the truth is, I have never even heard a podcast yet. At least, until now.

My friend Perry has been in the Chicago music industry probably since I was in pooping in diapers and has developed a jaded, yet justified opinion of music and radio. And if you've heard radio recently, for good reason. But the good news is that he's not just sitting there blubbering over it. He's challenging stations that claim "we play everything" and created his own podcast series called "The Best Radio You Have Never Heard" to show how he thinks radio should sound. You can listen to his podcasts here. Let me or him know what you think of the series.

Hearing Perry's podcasts is getting me excited to maybe take a crack at my own.

I am now addicted. Perry's "The Best Radio You Have Never Heard" is wonderful!

Hi, this is the best podcast i've found on the internet. your choice of songs and the way they are put together is great! Is there a way to get a (text)list of the artists and songs? Thanks again from Holland for those great shows!

New Podcasts for October 2005

Three new podcasts have been added for October 2005

Fractured Fairy Tales
Stop Your Squealing
Dance Of The Ranch Rabbits

Bandwidth has been reset for the month so get 'em while they are hot.

If you are using iTunes and not seeing all the new titles, you can un-subscribe and then re-subscribe and that ought to get you back on track as iTunes is still a little flaky.

Also I am finding out it seems the player on the site will work regardless.

As always just click this link for a direct ride to the podcast site:

http://bestradioyouhaveneverheard.podblaze.com/

or enter this URL into iTunes or any pod catcher/player:

Enjoy the new shows and be sure to let me know what you think . . .

MORE PODCASTS 9/16/2005

Seems my web server has opened me back up for uploading so I am throwing three or four more podcasts onto the site for September. This way there will be more available and I can still fly slightly under the radar as it seems the player, and the downloading mechanisms on not only the Podblaze site but on all the other podcast directories has not quite shut down.
Perhaps a chink in their armor for now.
Even iTunes seems to be functional again for my podcasts so either they have reset my bandwidth counter or it's back to gravy time when they weren't keeping track of the nearly 2000 downloads in August.

So I guess the dinner bell is ringing and get 'em whilst they are hot and available. At least for now.

And another reminder to download them as opposed to using the player. This way you've got them and can play them wherever it is you play mp3's, whether it is your iPod or just off your computer or burnt to CD.

THIS IS NOT INTERNET RADIO. I GET CHARGED BY THE POUND !

Don't be lazy and just open the web page and hit play. Take the extra three minutes and download the damn file.
This will be most appreciated by myself and others.

This way my band width doesn't get crazy and I continue on this path without paying a fortune.

New Podcast and Other News

Or the subtitle of Has Success Ruined The Best Radio You Have Never Heard might be more appropriate.

Appears that my podcasts were a little more popular than I was being led to believe by the site counter and even more to the surprise of the people  who host my stuff.
Seems like close to TWO THOUSAND downloads for the month of August. After fixing the code in their bandwidth counter, on three occasions they saw my monthly allotment of bandwidth go up in flames in a matter of minutes. I know this as I was on the phone with them the first time and they said, "you are not going to believe this . . ."

Also I think an issue that people have to understand is to get used to downloading the file and then listening to it as many times as they wish as opposed to using the player where it just racks up the bandwidth charges (yes, I pay to entertain you all with my little project).
You just need to click the downward arrow in the player box and it downloads to your computer and you have it forever.
Anyway, this is partially an explanation to why you may have only seen one title available for September.
So it looks like I am after a sponsor who will keep the bandwidth flowing.

Keep an eye on this space and check out the web page for this months title "Better War Through Religion"

New Podcasts

I have corrected the previous post to read the proper months as opposed to months that haven't happened. I guess sometimes I just like to imagine I am on drugs and do things like an idiot.

The good news is New Podcasts on or about SEPTEMBER 1st

Before they go, I wouldn't mind hearing from anyone/anybody who might like to share their favorite of the first bunch.

Direct Downloading From My Homepage

Just figured out, that if you would like to download a podcast directly from my homepage you can do so by just clicking the downward arrow in the play box next to the title you wish to download.

http://bestradioyouhaveneverheard.podblaze.com/

Then do whatever it is you do to save or play a mp3.

I still think iTunes is the way to go as it will update everytime I put in new podcasts.
Again just paste this URL into  the Subscribe To Podcast box under the advanced pull down menu in the tool bar.

And for those keeping score at home, 317 downloads to date . . .

p

August 06, 2005

Downloads to Date

In it's first 11 days of operation, there have been 245 downloads of the first seven shows I have uploaded that are currently available.
Not sure exactly if this is normal, good or bad.
The fact that I have more than five amazes me to be honest.
It's the "seek, search and destroy" aspect that has me intrigued.
How did people stumble on one of the many links and then decide to give it a click ?
I have gotten a tiny bit of feedback but not enough to explain what is going on out there in the Podcast universe.

Would love to know how, whomever found their way.
As always if you dig it, pass along the URLs to anyone that might dig this sort of thing and give a shout back here or by e-mail to your thoughts.
"Pure rubbish or a nice collection of music?"
"Will never download another single byte or looking forward to the next round up in September?"

Podcasts without an iPod
